ICANN Gives 4 Okay for Non-Latin Domains

The wait is over for adult webmasters and everyone else. We now know which countries will be the first to get the go-ahead to implement registration on domain names with non-Latin characters. Those countries are the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Egypt.

Until the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) changed the regulations this last October, all domain names were required to be comprised of Latin-based (English) characters. The domain-naming system effectively shut out non-Latin speaking registrants and users by forcing them to either use complicated scripts or settle for domain names in a foreign language.

The move by ICANN was years in the making, the project enduring much testing and debate. While the change is here the system is not quite perfected. Registrants may continue to need Latin characters for email addresses but the problem will eventually be resolved.

Since the ICANN decision of October 2009, a few countries has issued domain names with non-Latin characters but have had to suffix them with Latin TLDs such as dot-com or dot-net. Since Arabic languages read right-to-left, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates decided to wait until ICANN gave them full sway to non-Latin domain naming. Russia's language uses Cyrillic characters.

Expect to see the new non-Latin domain names come to fruition sometime around the Spring of 2010.
